The general consensus up and down the river is that the spring run is building and the river has seen a good early run of salmon thus far. This is obviously great news for the anglers who are within the travel boundaries as there’s plenty choice on where to fish – and it would appear that all parts of the river now offer a good chance of encountering a springer.
Last week served up fairly good early spring conditions –
River height – 1ft – 2ft (+/- 2in)
Water Temps – 41-43F or 5-6C
Air temps – 4-10C
A few beats got off to a good start Monday through Wednesday. The weather then started to change – it became colder with snow on the mountains and heavy rain showers at lower levels. Daytime temps dropped by a few degrees and river levels fluctuated with a mix of rain and some daytime snow melt – but it didn’t stop fish being caught –
Catch Summary
Upper River – 1 fish reported – Tulchan
Middle River – 7 fish reported – Knockando (Phones Beat), Laggan, Wester Elchies (2), Craigellachie (2)
Lower River – 11 fish reported – Gordon Castle, Orton, Rothes, Arndilly (6), Upper Arndilly/Easter Elchies
Average size probably around 8-9lb. Biggest fish was 11-12lbs
It’s always an encouraging sign to see spring salmon showing as they enter a pool or migrate upstream. In the colder conditions, which we have in March, sightings can be few so it’s very heartening to hear that fish are being seen on most beats, most days – this is usually an indication there’s a few about!

Looking ahead to this coming week –
Don’t put away those sunk lines and big monkey flies just yet – Week could start with higher water levels, then turning colder again. As usual, be prepared for every eventuality.
