Warm Water Angling on the Spey

The Spey Fishery Board is advising all anglers to adopt precautionary measures during the ongoing heatwaves impacting the River Spey. As water temperatures rise and river levels fall, dissolved oxygen levels fall which increases stress on our native salmonids, particularly post-catch and release stress. This can result in increased mortality, endangering the future of wild Scottish salmon.

Upper Spey Burns are getting perilously low

The Scottish Government has produced warm water angling protocols and we urge all anglers to follow this advice. In particular, the SFB recommends the following measures…

  • All anglers monitor water temperature before fishing.
  • Stop angling when water temperatures reaches 20 degrees
  • Keep all fish in the water after landing
  • Reduce handling as much as possible.

By following these guidelines, we can all help to safeguard the future of not only wild salmon but also the Spey and the sport that we cherish.
